The Torment of the Grave

إِثْبَاتُ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ لِلْبَيْهَقِيِّ The Proof of the Punishment of the Grave by al-Bayhaqī بَابُ مَا فِي هَٰذِهِ ٱلْآيَةِ مِنَ ٱلْوَعِيدِ لِلْكُفَّارِ بِعَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ تَعَالَى ﴿وَيُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ وَيَفْعَلُ ٱللَّهُ مَا يَشَاءُ﴾ [إبراهيم: ٢٧] 1. On the Warning Implied in this Verse for the Disbelievers Concerning the Punishment of the Grave: Allah Most High said: "And Allah leaves the wrongdoers to stray, and Allah does whatever He wills." [Ibrāhīm: 27] بَابُ إِخْبَارِ ٱلْمُصْطَفَى ﷺ بِأَنَّ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَ وَٱلْكَافِرَ جَمِيعًا يُسْأَلَانِ، ثُمَّ يُثَبَّتُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُ وَيُعَذَّبُ ٱلْكَافِرُ 2. On the Report of the Chosen One ﷺ That Both the Believer and the Disbeliever Are Questioned, Whereupon the Believer Is Granted Steadfastness and the Disbeliever Is Punished بَابُ نُزُولِ ٱلْمَلَائِكَةِ عِنْدَ ٱلْمَوْتِ بِبُشْرَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِ وَوَعِيدِ ٱلْكَافِرِ 3. On the Descent of the Angels at the Time of Death with Glad Tidings for the Believer and Warning for the Disbeliever بَابُ ٱلْإِسْرَاعِ بِٱلْجِنَازَةِ لِمَا تَقَدَّمُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْخَيْرِ إِنْ كَانَتْ صَالِحَةً 4. On Hastening with the Funeral Procession Due to the Good It Advances Toward, If the Deceased Was Righteous بَابُ إِخْبَارِ ٱلْمُصْطَفَى ﷺ بِقَوْلِ ٱلْجِنَازَةِ بَعْدَ ٱلْمُعَايَنَةِ 5. On the Chosen One’s ﷺ Report of the Funeral Bier’s Words after Witnessing [Its Fate] بَابُ ٱلدَّلِيلِ عَلَىٰ أَنَّهُ تُعَادُ رُوحُهُ فِي جَسَدِهِ ثُمَّ يُسْأَلُ فَيُثَابُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُ وَيُعَاقَبُ ٱلْكَافِرُ 6. On the Evidence that the Soul is Returned to the Body, After Which the Person is Questioned, Whereupon the Believer is Rewarded and the Disbeliever is Punished بَابُ ٱلدَّلِيلِ عَلَىٰ أَنَّهُ بَعْدَ ٱلسُّؤَالِ يُعْرَضُ عَلَىٰ مَقْعَدِهِ بِٱلْغَدَاةِ وَٱلْعَشِيِّ 7. On the Proof That After Questioning He Is Shown His Abode Morning and Evening بَابُ مَا يَكُونُ عَلَى ٱلْمُنَافِقِينَ مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ فِي ٱلْقَبْرِ قَبْلَ ٱلْعَذَابِ فِي ٱلنَّارِ 8. On the Punishment of the Hypocrites in the Grave Prior to the Punishment in the Fire بَابُ مَا يَكُونُ عَلَى مَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَنْ ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَعَالَى مِنَ ٱلْعَذَابِ فِي ٱلْقَبْرِ قَبْلَ عَذَابِ يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ Chapter on the Punishment in the Grave for Whoever Turns Away from the Remembrance of God the Exalted Before the Punishment of the Day of Resurrection بَابُ جَوَازِ ٱلْحَيَاةِ فِي جُزْءٍ مَنْفَرِدٍ وَأَنَّ ٱلْبِنْيَةَ لَيْسَتْ مِنْ شَرْطِ ٱلْحَيَاةِ، كَمَا لَيْسَتْ مِنْ شَرْطِ ٱلْحَيِّ، وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ جَوَازُ تَعْذِيبِ ٱلْأَجْزَاءِ ٱلْمُتَفَرِّقَةِ Chapter on the Possibility of Life in a Separate Part and that Structure is Not a Condition for Life, Nor is it a Condition for the Living, and Therein the Possibility of Torturing Dispersed Parts بَابُ ٱلدَّلِيلِ عَلَىٰ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ تَعَالَىٰ يَخْلُقُ عَلَىٰ مَنْ فَارَقَ ٱلدُّنْيَا أَحْوَالًا لَا نُشَاهِدُهَا وَلَا نُدْرِكُهَا يَتَنَعَّمُ فِيهَا قَوْمٌ وَيَتَأَلَّمُ ءَاخَرُونَ 11. On the Evidence that Allah Most High Creates States for Those Who Have Departed This World Which We Neither Witness Nor Perceive, Wherein Some People Enjoy Bliss and Others Suffer Pain بَابُ تَخْوِيفِ أَهْلِ ٱلْإِيْمَانِ بِعَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ 12. On Warning the People of Faith Regarding the Punishment of the Grave بَابُ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ فِي ٱلنَّمِيمَةِ وَٱلْبَوْلِ 13. On the Punishment of the Grave regarding Namīma and Urine بَابُ مَا يُخَافُ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ فِي ٱلنِّيَاحَةِ عَلَى ٱلْمَيِّتِ قَالَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ ٱلْعِلْمِ: إِذَا كَانَ قَدْ أَوْصَىٰ بِهَا 14. On the Fear of the Punishment of the Grave Regarding Lamentation over the Deceased: Some of the People of Knowledge Said: "This Applies if He Had Willed It." بَابُ مَا يُخَافُ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ فِي ٱلْغُلُولِ 15. On the Fear of Punishment in the Grave for Embezzlement بَابُ مَا يُخَافُ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ فِي ٱلدَّيْنِ 16. On What Is Feared Regarding the Punishment of the Grave on Account of Debt بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي طَاعَةِ ٱللَّهِ تَعَالَىٰ مِنَ ٱلْأَمْنِ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ 17. On What Has Been Narrated Regarding Obedience to Allah Most High Granting Safety from the Punishment of the Grave بَابُ مَا يُرْجَىٰ فِي الرِّبَاطِ مِنَ ٱلْأَمَانِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ ٱلْقَبْرِ 18. On the Hope That Guarding the Frontier Grants Security from the Trial of the Grave بَابُ مَا يُرْجَىٰ فِي ٱلشَّهَادَةِ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلْأَمْنِ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ فِي ٱلْقَبْرِ 19. On the Hope That Martyrdom in the Cause of Allah Grants Safety from the Punishment of Allah in the Grave بَابُ مَا يُرْجَىٰ فِي قِرَاءَةِ سُورَةِ ٱلْمُلْكِ مِنَ ٱلْمَنْعِ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ 20. On the Hope That Reciting Sūra al-Mulk Prevents the Punishment of the Grave بَابُ مَا يُرْجَى لِلْمَبْطُونِ مِنَ ٱلْأَمَانِ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ 21. On the Hope of Safety from the Punishment of the Grave for One Who Dies of an Abdominal Illness بَابُ مَا يُرْجَىٰ فِي ٱلْمَوْتِ لَيْلَةَ ٱلْجُمُعَةِ مِنَ ٱلْبَرَاءَةِ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ ٱلْقَبْرِ 22. On the Hope of Acquittal from the Trial of the Grave for One Who Dies on the Night of Friday بَابُ دُعَاءِ ٱلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ فِي صَلَاوةِ ٱلْجِنَازَةِ بِتَوْسِيعِ ٱلْمُدْخَلِ عَلَىٰ صَاحِبِهَا وَوِقَايَتِهِ فِتْنَةَ ٱلْقَبْرِ 23. On the Supplication of the Prophet ﷺ in the Funeral Prayer for the Widening of the Grave for its Companion and Protection for Him from the Trial of the Grave بَابُ مَا كَانَ يُرْجَىٰ فِي صَلَاةِ ٱلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَلَى ٱلْجَنَائِزِ مِنَ ٱلنُّورِ فِي ٱلْقُبُورِ وَذَهَابِ ٱلظُّلْمَةِ عَنْ أَهْلِهَا 24. On What Was Hoped for from the Prayer of the Prophet ﷺ over the Funeral Processions Regarding Light in the Graves and the Removal of Darkness from Their Occupants بَابُ دُعَاءِ ٱلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ عَلَى ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ بِعَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ 25. On the Prophet’s ﷺ Supplication That the Polytheists Be Punished in the Grave بَابُ ٱسْتِعَاذَةِ ٱلنَّبِيِّ ﷺ مِنْ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ وَأَمْرِهِ بِهَا 26. On the Prophet's ﷺ Seeking Refuge from the Punishment of the Grave and His Command to Do So بَابُ ٱلدُّعَاءِ لِلْمُؤْمِنِ بِٱلتَّثْبِيتِ بَعْدَ ٱلْفَرَاغِ مِنَ ٱلدَّفْنِ 27. On Supplicating for the Believer's Steadfastness After the Completion of Burial بَابُ تَمَنِّي مَنْ غُفِرَ لَهُ أَنْ يُعْلِمَ قَوْمَهُ بِمَا أَكْرَمَهُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِ 28. On the Desire of One Who Has Been Forgiven to Inform His People of How Allah Has Honored Him بَابُ تَأْوِيلِ قَوْلِ ٱللَّهِ ﷿ ﴿وَنُفِخَ فِي ٱلصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُمْ مِّنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَنْسِلُونَ * قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا﴾ [يس: ٥٢] ٱلْآيَةُ 29. On the Interpretation of the Statement of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime: "And the Horn will be blown; and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten. They will say, 'O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?'" to the End of the Verse بَابُ مَا حَضَرَنِي مِنْ أَقَاوِيلِ ٱلسَّلَفِ ﵃ فِي إِثْبَاتِ عَذَابِ ٱلْقَبْرِ وَمَا كَانُوا يَخَافُونَهُ مِنْ هَوْلِ ٱلْمُطَّلَعِ 30. On the Statements of the Righteous Predecessors – May Allah Be Pleased with Them – That I Have Collected Regarding the Affirmation of the Punishment of the Grave and What They Feared of the Terror of the Place of Ascent
