1. On Guarding the Tongue and the Virtue of Silence

٢ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، ثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الضَّبِّيُّ، وَسَعْدَوَيْهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَحْرٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ ﵁ قَالَ: قَالَ عُقْبَةُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ ﵁: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، مَا النَّجَاةُ؟ قَالَ: «أَمْلِكْ عَلَيْكَ لِسَانَكَ، وَلْيَسَعْكَ بَيْتُكَ، وَابْكِ عَلَى خَطِيئَتِكَ»
2. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Dāwūd ibn ʿAmr al-Ḍabbī and Saʿduwayh narrated to us on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, on the authority of Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, on the authority of ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Zaḥr, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Yazīd, on the authority of al-Qāsim, on the authority of Abū Umāma – may Allah be pleased with him – who said: ʿUqba ibn ʿĀmir – may Allah be pleased with him – said: "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is salvation?' He said: 'Control your tongue, let your house be sufficient for you, and weep over your sin.'"[1]
٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ الْمَدَنِيِّ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ ﵁ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: «مَنْ يَتَوَكَّلْ لِي بِمَا بَيْنَ لَحْيَيْهِ وَرِجْلَيْهِ أَتَوَكَّلُ لَهُ بِالْجَنَّةِ»
3. ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī narrated to us: My father narrated to me on the authority of Abū Ḥāzim al-Madanī, on the authority of Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī – may Allah be pleased with him – who said: The Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – said: "Whoever guarantees for me what is between his two jawbones and his two legs, I will guarantee for him Paradise."[2]
٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي وَعَمِّي، عَنْ جَدِّي، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ﵁ قَالَ: سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَنْ أَكْثَرِ مَا يُدْخِلُ النَّاسَ الْجَنَّةَ؟ قَالَ: «تَقْوَى اللَّهِ، وَحُسْنُ الْخُلُقِ»، وَسُئِلَ عَنْ أَكْثَرِ مَا يُدْخِلُ النَّاسَ النَّارَ، قَالَ: «الْأَجْوَفَانِ: الْفَمُ وَالْفَرْجُ»
4. Abū Muslim ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yūnus narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Idrīs narrated to us: my father and my uncle informed me on the authority of my grandfather, on the authority of Abū Hurayra – may Allah be pleased with him – who said: The Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – was asked about that which most leads people to Paradise, and he said: "Fear of Allah and good character." And he was asked about that which most leads people to the Fire, and he said: "The two hollows: the mouth and the private parts."[3]
٥ - حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ الْعَسْقَلَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ صَدَقَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ حَبِيبٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَسْوَدُ بْنُ أَصْرَمَ الْمُحَارِبِيُّ ﵁ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَوْصِنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: «أَتَمْلِكُ يَدَكَ؟» قَالَ: قُلْتُ: فَمَا أَمْلِكُ إِذَا لَمْ أَمْلِكْ يَدِي؟ قَالَ: «أَتَمْلِكُ لِسَانَكَ؟» قَالَ: فَمَا أَمْلِكُ إِذَا لَمْ أَمْلِكْ لِسَانِي؟ قَالَ: «فَلَا تَبْسُطْ يَدَكَ إِلَّا إِلَى خَيْرٍ، وَلَا تَقُلْ بِلِسَانِكَ إِلَّا مَعْرُوفًا»
5. Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-ʿAsqalānī narrated to us: ʿAmr ibn Abī Salama narrated to us on the authority of Ṣadaqa ibn ʿAbd Allāh, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAlī, on the authority of Sulaymān ibn Ḥabīb: Aswad ibn Aṣram al-Muḥāribī – may Allah be pleased with him – narrated to me saying: I said, 'Advise me, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: "Do you control your hand?" He said: I said, 'What do I control if I do not control my hand?' He said: "Do you control your tongue?" He said: 'What do I control if I do not control my tongue?' He said: "Then do not extend your hand except toward good, and do not say with your tongue what is proper."[4]
٦ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ عُتَيْبَةَ، وَحَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ مَيْمُونِ بْنِ أَبِي شَبِيبٍ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ ﵁ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَنُؤَاخَذُ بِمَا نَقُولُ؟ قَالَ: «ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا ابْنَ جَبَلٍ، وَهَلْ يَكُبُّ النَّاسَ فِي النَّارِ عَلَى مَنَاخِرِهِمْ إِلَّا حَصَائِدُ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ؟» قَالَ حَبِيبٌ فِي هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ: «وَهَلْ تَقُولُ شَيْئًا إِلَّا لَكَ أَوْ عَلَيْكَ»
6. Abū Khaythama and Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us: Jarīr narrated to us on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtayba and Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, on the authority of Maymūn ibn Abī Shabīb, on the authority of Muʿādh ibn Jabal – may Allah be pleased with him – who said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, shall we be held accountable for what we say?' He said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O son of Jabal! Is there anything that casts people face-first into the Fire except the harvests of their tongues?" Ḥabīb said regarding this hadith: 'Do you say anything except that it is either for you or against you.'[5]
٧ - حَدَّثَنِي حَمْزَةُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَاعِزٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الثَّقَفِيِّ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، حَدِّثْنِي بِأَمْرٍ أَعْتَصِمُ بِهِ. قَالَ: «قُلْ: رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقِمْ». قَالَ: قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، مَا أَخْوَفُ مَا تَخَافُ عَلَيَّ؟ فَأَخَذَ بِلِسَانِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: «هَذَا»
7. Ḥamza ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to me: ʿAbdān ibn ʿUthmān informed us: ʿAbd Allāh informed us: Maʿmar informed us on the authority of al-Zuhrī, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Māʿiz, on the authority of Sufyān ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Thaqafī, who said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, tell me something to which I may hold fast.' He said: "Say: My Lord is Allah, then remain steadfast." He said: I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is the thing you fear most for me?' So he took hold of his tongue and then said: "This."[6]
١٢ - حَدَّثَنِي عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى يَعْنِي الْقَزَّازَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الصَّهْبَاءِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَالَ، أُرَاهُ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ: «إِذَا أَصْبَحَ ابْنُ آدَمَ أَصْبَحَتِ الْأَعْضَاءُ كُلُّهَا تُكَفِّرُ اللِّسَانَ تَقُولُ: اتَّقِ اللَّهَ فِينَا، فَإِنَّكَ إِنِ اسْتَقَمْتَ اسْتَقَمْنَا، وَإِنِ اعْوَجَجْتَ اعْوَجَجْنَا»
12. ʿImrān ibn Mūsā – meaning al-Qazzāz – narrated to me: Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us on the authority of Abū ʾl-Ṣahbāʾ, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Abū Saʿīd – I think he raised it [to the Prophet] – who said: "When the son of Adam wakes in the morning, all of his limbs humble themselves before the tongue, saying: 'Fear Allah concerning us, for if you remain upright, we remain upright; and if you become crooked, we become crooked.'"[8]
أَمِ الْأَعْوَرُ الشَّنِّيُّ حَيْثُ يَقُولُ:
Or al-ʾAʿwar al-Shannī, where he says:[13]
٦٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، حَدَّثَنِي طَلْحَةُ الْأَيَامِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْسَجَةَ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ ﵁ قَالَ: جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ: دُلَّنِي عَلَى عَمَلٍ يُدْخِلُنِي الْجَنَّةَ. قَالَ: «أَطْعِمِ الْجَائِعَ، وَاسْقِ الظَّمْآنَ، وَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ، وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ، فَإِنْ لَمْ تُطِقْ فَكُفَّ لِسَانَكَ إِلَّا مِنْ خَيْرٍ»
67. Aḥmad ibn Jamīl narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak informed us, saying: ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān informed us: Ṭalḥa al-Yāmī narrated to me, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwsaja narrated to me on the authority of al-Barāʾ – may Allah be pleased with him – who said: A bedouin came to the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – and said: “Direct me to a deed that will admit me to Paradise.” He said: “Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong. If you cannot manage that, then restrain your tongue except from good.”[14]
٦٨ - حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي مُرَاوِحٍ اللَّيْثِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ ﵁، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: «كُفُّ شَرَّكَ عَنِ النَّاسِ؛ فَإِنَّهَا صَدَقَةٌ مِنْكَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ»
68. Khalaf ibn Hishām narrated to us: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us on the authority of Hishām ibn ʿUrwa, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abū Murāwiḥ al-Laythī, on the authority of Abū Dharr – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – said: “Restrain your evil from people, for indeed it is a charity from you upon yourself.”[15]
